Plettenberg Bay coastal estate: electric fence on a 2.4 m clearview perimeter, and solar camera poles

Black clearview fence with an electric fence on top running up a green coastal slope, coastal estate, Plettenberg Bay

A coastal estate in Plettenberg Bay, about 1,200 km from our Walkerville base. We fitted a stainless-steel electric fence on top of a 2.4 m black clearview perimeter that runs through dune fynbos and down to the beach, put up solar-powered camera poles linked by wireless, and came back for the entrance gate and access control.

Where: Plettenberg Bay · Site: Coastal estate · Done: Nov 2024

Sea air, steep dunes and no power along most of the boundary

Salt air rusts ordinary fence hardware, the line climbs and drops through the dunes down to the beach, and most camera points are nowhere near mains power. And with the site 1,200 km from home, every part had to be planned, ordered and trucked down before we started.

We built it for the coast: stainless wire, coated brackets and solar on the poles

  • Fitted 9 to 12 strands of electric fence on top of the 2.4 m clearview, with 12 strands on the steep sections to close the gaps.
  • Used galvanised, plastic-coated omega brackets that slot into the clearview posts, so nothing is drilled and the coating stays sealed.
  • Strung 1.2 mm braided stainless-steel wire with stainless ferrules, tensioners and spring hooks, so nothing rusts in the sea air.
  • Split the fence into two zones on two energisers, for more power on stainless wire, and earthed it every 30 m with copper-coated earth spikes.
  • Added warning signs, lightning diverters, gate contacts, sirens and strobe lights.
  • Put up 12 galvanised, powder-coated camera poles, with solar panels and gel batteries where there's no mains power, linked back by wireless.
  • Installed 7 thermal cameras, a PTZ camera with a wiper, and AcuSense and ColorVu cameras, all on a 32-channel recorder in a server cabinet, with surge protection on every link.
  • Our team led the work on site, with local helpers; phase one took about four weeks.
  • Phase two (May 2025): supplied and fitted a 5.4 m black clearview sliding gate, installed the access control with video intercom stations, and a touch-screen handset and monitor in the guardroom.
  • Back in June 2025: added a camera at the guardhouse gate, upgraded the wireless links to see past the growing vegetation, and set up remote programming.

A perimeter built for the coast, from 1,200 km away

The estate's boundary carries a two-zone stainless electric fence from the entrance down to the beach, watched from solar camera poles, with the gate and access control finished in the second phase.
