Walkerville smallholding: 2 m, 20-strand freestanding electric fence

A 2 m high, 20-strand freestanding electric fence along the front and back of a smallholding in Walkerville. It stands on its own posts, so it needs no wall.

Where: Walkerville · Site: Smallholding · Done: Apr 2024

The front and back of the plot needed a fence that stands on its own

Both runs were L-shaped, and at one point the new fence met the neighbour's existing electric fence. The gate had to be part of the fence too.

We built both runs on posts and stays, and linked them through the neighbour's side

  • Built 2 m high, 20-strand freestanding fences on 100 mm posts with 50 mm stays, using 2.24 mm fully galvanised wire and Y standards.
  • Fitted offset brackets on the neighbour's fence to carry power from the bottom section to the top section.
  • Put in two gate posts with tensioners, ran the fence onto the gate and fitted a heavy-duty gate contact.
  • Installed a single-zone, 8-joule energiser with HT cable to the fence.
  • Added a dual lightning diverter, an earth grid of three earth spikes, and a siren and strobe.

What we installed

  • Merlin M18 energiser, 8 J
  • 100 mm posts, 50 mm stays, Y standards
  • 2.24 mm fully galvanised wire, 20 strands
  • Heavy-duty gate contact
  • Dual lightning diverter, 3-spike earth grid
  • Siren and strobe

Both runs and the gate are live on one energiser

The front and back of the plot are fenced to 2 m, and the siren and strobe go off if the fence is cut or shorted.
